As of today, I’ve only seen four movies that are up for Oscars this year:
Wicked (I’ve seen it 4x in theaters)
Inside Out 2 (I went by myself and sobbed my eyes out)
The Last Showgirl (This Las Vegas-based movie stars Pamela Anderson, and it’s very good, but very sad)
And now…Flow!
This beautiful film is what I want to chat about today.
I Love An Animated Film
So, if you didn’t already know, I love a PG-rated movie, especially if it is animated. It’s mostly because I scare easy and I love some classic escapism. I unironically enjoy franchises like Shrek and Despicable Me (note: this movie is nothing like those films).
When I saw the Flow poster, I immediately knew I’d be interested in seeing it. A cat swimming in a beautiful ocean with fish? Count me in.
Before going in, I knew a few things:
The film was created in Latvia by Gints Zilbalodis.
It is up for 2 different Oscars: Best Animated Feature and Best International Feature Film.
It has no dialogue and runs about an hour and a half.
Little did I know the beautiful rollercoaster I was about to experience.
Fletcher’s Flow Review
First things first, this is NOT a film for kids. It might be PG and feature some adorable animals, but this movie has several intense moments.
The story is simple: the world is flooding (very quickly), and a cat and some animals he meets along the way are trying to survive. With a beautiful score and breathtaking animation, this movie takes you along that journey.
There are numerous moments that my friend Cassidy and I were at the edge of our seats. The character development for each animal is also so great—they each have distinct sounds and personalities. You’re rooting for them with all your heart!
I really hope this movie wins at least one Oscar for numerous reasons:
Telling a story for an hour and a half with no dialogue is such a beautiful concept. This movie can be understood and globally loved without being lost in translation.
This movie is an engaging reminder about some of the real consequences of climate change.
These are Latvia’s first Oscar nominations!
Have you seen Flow? What did you think? Let me know!
The next movie I really want to watch is The Wild Robot, which is up for 3 Oscars and is supposed to be very heartwarming as well.
With love,
Fletcher Rowe
What I’m Listening To
I’ve been listening to two specific concert albums recorded at London’s Royal Albert Hall—Raye and Dua Lipa!
Beautiful pop music accompanied by a full orchestra? Count me in!
Yes. Flow is a beautiful movie. I watched it last week and I'm still thinking about it.
